The Emperor’s Giraffe

On September 20, 1414, an extraordinary gift arrived at the court of Zhu Di, the Yongle Emperor of the Chinese Ming dynasty. The gift was nothing less than the Qilin, a magical creature from Chinese legend said to represent an auspicious sign. The exotic animal represented a unique emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and an astounding age of Chinese exploration little known here in the west.
