Mars and Mariner 4

On July 15, 1965 Mariner 4 was the closest that a spacecraft had ever come to earth’s planetary neighbor, Mars, where it captured the first images of another planet ever returned from deep space, even though that required a few items from an art supply store. Mariner 4 transformed our entire understanding of the red planet, and set the stage for future missions that flew to Mercury, Venus, Mars, and even the outer planets.
